Let's Make Dances Together!

In the past year and a half, I went from grad school student, to homeless and jobless in New York City, to living and working in New York City as a dance teacher, dancer and dance maker. After an initial six months of taking class and sporadic performing, there was a void because I hadn't been making any dances. (After an intense two years of nothing but!) So I decided to just do it. I called some dancers, found studio space and started working. I essentially jumped off a cliff.

By June, I was beyond overwhelmed. There were so many good dance things happening, but I was paying for studio space, props and costumes out of pocket. OUT OF POCKET. Did I mention that my main bread and butter is part-time teaching supplemented by babysitting? I was spending my grocery/rent/BILLS money on... studio space.

So then I stopped. Took a business class. Made a plan.

Now that I know I can do this whole dancer-teacher-choreographer thing in New York City I can approach it a bit more practically, but I need your help. I need the help of individuals who believe in me and what I am doing.

What am I doing?
I am directing a project-to-project dance company that produces at least one major dance project every three months, hiring dancers and collaborators on an as-needed basis. Projects may include performances, teaching or choreographic workshops, artistic or administrative professional development of the company, and any other activity that furthers the mission of the company.

What is the mission?
To create choreography which actively engages the audience’s physical and emotional senses with dance performance; in addition to involving audiences in the artistic process.  The work produced often reflects real life experiences exploring, but not limited to, interests in black cultures and the experiences of women. The movement vocabulary reflects my diverse training in various styles of modern, ballet, and African dance. Dancers frequently use their voice with spoken text and audible breath.  The company aims to move people through dance making them feel human, even if it only provokes a visceral reaction to the physicality on stage, or incites curiosity and conversation.

The company is based and operates from New York City, favoring the Harlem community for community-based work. We are also open to travel for projects both domestically and internationally as relevant to the mission and interests of the company.

Are you officially a business/non-profit? I definitely think you should look into being a 501(c)3 so that donations are tax exempt. if you need help with the legal work, you should look into local law schools - I'm currently taking a clinic where we work with Detroit area small businesses/non-profits with their legal paperwork....I know Columbia has a similar clinic (see http://www.law.columbia.edu/focusareas/clinics/ngo), and I bet pretty many of the other NYC law schools do as well.

Yes, I am officially a business... dba and applying for fiscal sponsorship in the meanwhile before i get nonprofit status. Thanks for recommending Columbia, I had been looking into Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. I appreciate the direction. :)
