welcome to Buppie-dom

The UrbanDictionary.com defines "buppie" as:
1. A highly sophisticated and upper class black person. Usually a Black city or suburban resident with a well-paid professional job and an affluent lifestyle.
b(lack) + (y)uppie

2. Black Urban Professional. Black professionals and executives in their late twenties and early thirties.
Well the great cable channel of BET (said with all the sarcasm one can muster) has decided that they would like to present a reality-TV show about the buppies of Harlem: "Harlem Heights." I can not tell you how disappointed I was. Well actually, I can.
  1. From purely a television stand point, it's bad. The people on there are not good in front of a camera. All the scenes are so obviously staged. The editing is cut and paste. Need I go on...?
  2. It is in this form that the content is presented: basically only the social lives of these handsome, smart, 20-somethings. We can't follow them to work or any place of substance, so instead we see Brooke recount a date to her girlfriend, cut to the guy telling his side of it to his homeboy. From what I could tell watching the show, nothing really happens. Hmmm.
  3. My friend made a good point: As much as I love Harlem, there isn't really much poppin' there. I mean yes, there are some great lounges, bars, restaurants, cafes etc. but for the most part, let's be real - people live uptown and work and party downtown. Unless they're throwing a house party.
The most entertaining thing about watching it - actually it was hilarious - is that I know some of the people on there, or know of them, or know who they dated etc. They say NYC is a big city, but especially amongst Harlem's buppies, the world is really small. As another friend mentioned, it's like the ultimate-facebook, on tv. I probably will continue to watch for this entertainment value alone.

Anyways, have you watched? What do you think? Am I off-base or are you also wondering how this got approved to be on television? I'm interested to know other people's opinions...
